Asgardia- The Space Nation

Hello Readers,
First of all, Happy New Year.

Anyways, let me get back to what I was saying.

Today I found out about this "country" that declared independence in October 12th of this year. It is called Asgardia. It was founded by Igor Ashurbeyli. It is a country that is going to be in space, and it is the first one ever created. Naturally, when most people hear of something unique like this, they get excited. However, there are some problems that the government of Asgardia is going to face. One thing is that the leaders of this micro country acknowledges some of these problems.

Before I continue, I want to assume that they will use ships, as there are pictures of hypothetical ships used by the nation (below).

Let me lay down some of the problems:

  • Getting 573968 people (as of this writing) into space.
  • Definition of a country.
  • Getting acknowledged as a country (by other countries and the UN).
  • Functioning.
  • Enforcing law.
  • And a couple others.

Ok, first one. Getting every citizen into space.

This would require SO MANY spaceships and so much money, and they probably don't have that much money. I bet they barely have enough money to launch their satellite into space in 2017, let alone more than half a million people. They know that they cannot do this, and they need decades of time before they are able to do this. Why? Because money and technology. They don't have enough money, and the technology to safely have this many people and to manage them IN SPACE and IN A SPACESHIP is way to hard.

Now there are several solutions:

  1. Sending people one by one (maybe 10-50 at a time?) until everyone is in space.
  2. Sending a couple of people, in a small ship. Let them do some things in Space (whatever they want to do), then add more to that place, and make a giant ship in space.
  3. Wait for a space elevator and send many more at once.
  4. Put a giant spaceship and use a spaceplane and put everyone up there.
Now I can explain some problems with each.

  1. This would need money, and they don't have it. Keeping this many people is hard (read above).
  2. Same as #1, except wouldn't they want to move around and not just orbit around.
  3. There will not be a space elevator anytime soon.
  4. Same as 1 and 2.

Starting up the nation with everyone is going to take such a long time that most of the government officials and most of the people who applied would not live to see the nation in space, including the founder.

Second problem, being a country by the dictionary.

Not the same as number 1. Let me explain.

In the Montevideo convention of 1933, the conditions of being a country was made. It is commonly used (I think). This is what it said:

"The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states."

Asgardia does not fit letter a, and I already explained it (yet they have the audacity to try to get recognized by the UN, which I will explain soon).
It does not fit letter b. They say that they are in space, but they have no ships to stay in. Also, where in space? Which spaceships? There are many questions to answer.
It does not fit in letter c yet. They have some parts of the structure of the government created, and no constitution. No one is in the government yet. They also have no location of their government.
It kind of fits d, as they are trying to negotiate with the UN, but they have no ambassadors.

So they only fill 1/4 as they only fill 2 of them partly, so I will count them as .5.

They are not going to be considered as a nation, or at least not yet.

Third Problem, getting acknowledged by other countries and the UN. I described it in the second problem. The second problem is going to lead to the third one. They want to be part of the UN, yet they have no reason to be considered as a country or should be one.

Fourth problem, being a functional country.

Assuming that the first three countries are made, how is the economy going to run? They definitely won't get that much tourism as space tourism is not that big. If they get to space much later (in a couple of decades), then there will still be problems. They might get some tourism, but what else? How are they going to farm? How are they going to feed their population? Is one small problem going to make a GIANT effect? Wouldn't it be so easy to destroy the entire country? There are so many questions to ask, especially the fact that it is in SPACE. Also, wouldn't it be harder to have foreign relations? Think about it.

Fifth problem. Enforcing law.

I somewhat described it in the fourth problem. One bomb and the entire population goes poof. Also, I could kill someone and easily escape the ship (escape). What if there is a uprising? They kill the pilots of the ship and crash it somewhere, killing thousands? Or they could control thousands of people when hijacking a ship. If a ship is hijacked by terrorists, it would be many times worse than 9/11.

Those are my main points of why the country will not work in a couple of decades or even centuries.

Thank your for reading.

Thank you and happy new year,

Edit: They will actually make a space station. But still, same thing applies.

How Many Continents are There in The World? (Pt. 2) + 1000 Page View Special

Hello Readers,

First of all, thank you for giving me 1000 page views on my blog. Anyways, lets jump into the actual topic.

Looking back at my first post, I quickly realized my mistake (while on reddit).
I completely forgot the fact that North America and South America were 2 different tectonic plates. So that means they are 2 different continents.

Remember, this is the definition of a continent:
A large landmass (usually 2,000,000 and more) and surrounded by ocean or connected with a landbridge (usually small).

If you don't know what is part of what continent, you could use 2 different indicators:

- Tectonic plates
- lowering sea level
- geological history

(Besides, Antarctica is its own continent, and I can explain why if you want me too. I won't because I don't have much time too and only an idiot would think it is not.)

http://geology.com/sea-level-rise/ Raise it to 200 meters, you will see that it is still the same # of continents.

So, there are 6. North America, South America, Eurasia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica.

So, some questions.

1. Why is Africa a continent?
- Because there is a landbridge that separate Eurasia to Africa.

2. Why is South America a continent?
-Refer to answer to question #1.

3. What makes up Australia?
- Australia, New Guinea, and Islands around. Here is some useful websites and pictures to see:
https://calculatedearth.com/ (Lower the sea level 100 meters to have a good idea of what I am talking about)

4. What continent are the islands of the pacific?
-None

5. What continent is iceland a part of?
-North America and Eurasia. The reason is that there is a fault that goes through Iceland. So that means about 3/4 of the island is NA and 1/4 is EA.

BUT BUT HOW ABOUT LOS ANGELES????
That is still part of North America, It is literally attacked to NA. Also, there is no giant landmass on the pacific plate. Here is a good picture to use for the MAJOR plates.

6. How about Jan Mayen?
- None. It is considered a "microcontinent" because it is very small and it is on its own plate, AND NOTHING ELSE.

The picture from number 5 will answer the rest of your worries and questions. Ask in the comments if you have any other concerns or questions.

Thank you for reading.

Edit- The Arabian Plate is a bit off. The plate is too much into Iran, it is not that much.

Pt.1 Additional Notes

Many Scientists and Geographers already say that there are only 6 continents (Europe and Asia being Eurasia) (Still wrong)

Also, America should be the continent, and the United States should be the Country.

How Many Continents are There in The World? (Pt. 1)

Hello Readers,

Before I get into what I was actually going to write about, I will post every Sunday and Friday. Anyways, enjoy

-----------------------------

I will actually make a good blog post for the first time lol.

-----------------------------

(THIS BLOG MAY NOT BE 100% ACCURATE (but it is for the most part). If there is an error, put that in the comments, I will fix it)(There will also be grammatical errors)

I might actually make a video on this. Anyways,

History:
Earth is made of large land masses. Greeks were the first to come up with this idea of "Continents". At the time, when they wanted to spilt up the land, they wanted to make Europe distict to Asia (Although they knew that Asia is with Europe is one (Eurasia)). We stuck to this to this day. Your History, Geography (if you had one), teachers said that. Everyone says that.

Anyways, you answer. How many continents are there? 3? 5? 7? Dozons?

You most likely said "7". The truth is, your wrong. (Unless you are that kid in my brother's world history class,

The amount cannot really be determined....kind of.

You see, I think there are 5. Now, I will say, what is NOT a continent first. Then we will decide what is. For the most part, I will be arguing that there is 5.

First of all, lets look at a world map. This world map will  have no political boundries, but  will be labeled by continents, not counties.

We see seven. This is Wrong.

First of all, Georgia, Azerbijan, and Armenia are in "Asia" .That is common logic. (Not that it matters)

Also, Europe and Asia are ONE continent, Eurasia. What separates Europe and Asia?

1. Ural Mountains
2. Caucasus Moutains
3. A random line near a river (they did not even have the audacity to put it on the river)
4. "Different Cultures"
5. Politics

How would mountains cut 2 different continents? They don't.

Remember, the definition of a continent is large landmasses separated by oceans, or essentially large pieces of land.

My brother aruged that there used to be a techtonic plate there (after all, mountains are not created out of nothing).

-True, but does that make the rockies or the himalayas into another contient. No. Besides, there is a reason why Pangea is a contienent, not seven continents.

BUT BUT India is a contient (also my brother)

-India is too small to be considered a contintent. Yes, it is on a techtonic plate., but it is stuck to Asia.

Europe and Asia are also on the same techtonic plate, the Eurasian Plate.

Some people may still argue the cultural factor, but it does not matter. They are not even that different. They had interactions for THOUSANDS of years. Besides, culture does not have a say in geography or geology.

And politics has no say in geography or geology.

Our world should look like this now-
(sorry for bad paint skills, I was using a ms-paint like program on the mac)

Now we have 6.

Now we have another big problem. North and South America.

Why is it split?

1. Isthmus of Panama
2. Panama Canal
3. Cultural

I already explained #3 above.

Panama Canal is artificial, and does not matter. We are talking about NATURAL things. Also, remember a definition, the Panama Canal is not a large ocean, nor is a small piece of land able to split up 2 continents. Also, they are attached. The Panama Canal is sooo insignificant.

They are also on the same techtonic plate. This makes them the same continent. This is how the world looks like now.-

This is all that there is really. For now. The next part (Part 2), I will discuss why Africa, Austrailia, and Antarctica (No, CGP Grey, they are continents) are continents (I will also tell about how big is a continent).  I will also discuss what continent iceland belongs, what continent Jan Mayen is part of, why the Denmark Pass should be called something else, and what continent New Guinea is part of. I will also talk about the importance of looking at past history of the location of continents and how the world looked like ~10000 years ago (About the beginning of the Holocene Epoch).

Thank you for reading, and signing off,
